Work and leadership of the Office of Religious Freedom lost

Today is Easter Monday, the end of Lent and the end of the celebration of the most significant event in Christianity – the death and the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. It is ironic that in this day and age of supposed tolerance that more and more people around the world face pressure just because of what they believe. We are told that 75% of the globe faces persecution because of faith issues and the problem is not getting smaller.

This is an issue that can actually bring people together.

Strange then that last week the Liberal government chose to finally come out and oppose the one agency in Canada that has been working effectively and globally on these issues. The Office of Religious Freedom under Ambassador Andrew Bennett has been doing stellar work on a very small budget, supporting freedom of belief. They have funded projects around the world supporting the freedom to believe or the freedom not to believe if people choose. They have worked with educators, trained media, worked with monitoring agencies and local communities.

It is unfortunate that this work and this leadership will be lost.
