Our balanced budget highlights a phenomenal achievement: Having just come through the worst global economic crisis since the 1930’s and in the midst of global uncertainty, our Government has balanced the budget without cutting provincial transfers or increasing taxes.
This is something the previous Liberal government failed at. To balance the budget, they cut transfer payments and program spending including healthcare. They increased taxes and reduced benefits. Canadians paid more for less.
Our Government has taken a very different approach. We have reduced taxes over 180 times since 2006, providing tax relief and benefits worth up to $6,600 a year for an average family of four. The overall federal tax burden is now at its lowest level in more than 50 years.
The opposition wants to reverse our tax cuts. They dream constantly of bigger government.
With the announcement of a balanced budget, we have reached a very significant milestone, one that Canadians can applaud: They are keeping more and more of their own money.
