Last Thursday, Ralph Goodale announced that, due to the Florida school shooting in the United States, he is bringing new firearms restrictions to Canada. The Liberals already lost this battle once and they are back at it again.
The long gun registry was the biggest boondoggle in Canadian history and it took place when Goodale was in Cabinet. I predict that the last $2 billion wasted on the gun registry will be nothing compared to this upcoming debacle. Goodale, the Public Safety Minister, is spending hundreds of millions to promote marijuana use while once again going after farmers, hunters and legitimate firearms owners. Remember, this is a government that can’t even manage a payroll program for its own employees.
Canada presently has restrictions on firearms – requiring extensive screening, limiting and even prohibiting specific firearms, and requiring restricted firearms to be used at ranges.
Our changes to abolish the long gun registry and to simplify the transportation requirements were very common sense. Other changes such as making licensing permanent are the direction Goodale should be going, not using the death of American teenagers for his own political ends.
