Ottawa, ON – David Anderson, Member of Parliament for Cypress Hills-Grasslands and Official Opposition critic for International Human Rights and Religious Freedom; and the Hon. Tony Clement, Member of Parliament for Parry Sound-Muskoka and Official Opposition critic for Foreign Affairs, today released a statement in response to the violent attacks and killing of Venezuelan opposition party officials in the lead-up to the December 6th parliamentary elections:

“We condemn the senseless killing of Venezuelan regional opposition leader Luis Manuel Diaz. We further condemn the attempts made on the lives of politician Henrique Capriles Radonsnki and Lillian Tintor, human rights activist and wife of imprisoned political leader Leopoldo Lopez and call for an immediate end to all violence. Free and fair elections cannot take place in an environment of violence and intimidation.

“The Conservative Party strongly opposes the intimidation tactics and deadly violence that have surrounded this campaign. As election day approaches, it is our strongest hope that the people of Venezuela will be able to fully participate in a free and democratic process.”
