Canola: Assertiveness needed with China

I’d prefer not to come back to the same issue again and again. However, Justin Trudeau’s failure to address the issues around the Chinese government’s attack on our canola farmers has emboldened the Chinese authorities to further punish our agriculture producers.

Now, as they did with canola, they have selectively begun to restrict our pork shipments to China. It’s as though Justin Trudeau and this government are paralyzed. While the government moved to expand the interest-free agricultural loan program for canola farmers, this is not a good short, medium, or long-term solution. There’s been no replacement for John McCallum, the former ambassador, and so we are without a top-level representative in Beijing.

The Chinese government very clearly understands weakness and strength, and they know we are not strong. It’s not good enough to say we will send a delegation at some point. We need to be much more assertive with them. Our Ag Minister and the Prime Minister should not be acting as though they’re scared of the situation – that will only exacerbate it further.
