Attacks on Kenyan churches kills and wounds dozens

NAIROBI—As the hunt for hostages abducted from the Dadaab refugee camp continued Sunday, in the nearby town of Garissa close to Somalia’s border, masked assailants attacked two churches with grenades and gunfire, killing at least 15 worshippers and wounding dozens.

Children were among the dead and wounded, overwhelming the town’s small hospital.

A witness who spoke by telephone with the Toronto Star shortly after the church assault said he heard a “boom,” followed by screaming, and then the wail of ambulances.

“We later ran into the hospital and there were many, many bodies,” he said, asking that his name not be used for fear of speaking out.

A visibly shaken David Mwange, who was in one of the churches at the time of the attack, told an Associated Press reporter: “We were deep in prayers preparing to give our offerings.
