Ottawa, ON – Today, David Anderson, Member of Parliament for Cypress Hills – Grasslands and Official Opposition critic for International Human Rights and Religious Freedom, has released a statement condemning the North Korean regime following the sentencing of Reverend Hyeon Soo Lim, an imprisoned Canadian citizen:

“The sentence of life imprisonment and hard labour delivered to Reverend Hyeon Soo Lim for so-called ‘crimes against the state’ is a clear violation of the rule of law, due process and Mr. Lim’s right of religious freedom.

“I join with the Hon. Rona Ambrose, Leader of the Official Opposition in condemning Mr. Lim’s sentence in the strongest possible terms.

“North Korea’s history of intolerance towards religion and the free expression of ideas is deplorable. The treatment of Reverend Lim is just the latest affront to human rights in that country. However, Reverend Lim’s Canadian citizenship places even more of an onus on the Government Canada to pursue all possible means in securing his release and return to Canada.”
