FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ottawa, ON – David Anderson, Member of Parliament for Cypress Hills—Grasslands, has condemned the Liberal government’s consultation process for their proposed ban on handguns and what they call “assault weapons.”
“The Liberal government is proposing to ban handguns and some rifles without justification, said Anderson. “While failing to address gang and gun crime, this government is choosing once again to gang up on legitimate firearm owners.”
The Department of Public Safety’s Dialogue on Handguns and Assault Weapons allows Canadians only one month to comment on the proposed ban. Online consultations will close on November 10.
“The Liberals claim they are consulting Canadians, but rural Canada and my constituents are completely ignored,” said Anderson. “Legal firearm usage is a bigger issue in rural areas than urban areas, yet there is no direct consultation in any rural areas at all.”
The only in-person consultations on the proposed gun ban will occur in Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto, and Moncton. There are none planned for residents of Cypress Hills—Grasslands.
“It is also problematic that the online consultation allows for multiple entries, which will inevitably lead to inaccuracies in the results,” added Anderson.
“This isn’t a proper consultation. It is a stacked deck. It is a joke and needs to be stopped until it can be done without manipulation. This government is out of touch and is trying to pit one community against another. They specialize in dividing Canadians. This is just one more example.”
