David Anderson, MP Happy with Tax Cuts in Government’s Economic Plan
January 27, 2009

David Anderson, Member of Parliament for Cypress Hills - Grasslands, commends Prime Minister Harper and Minister Flaherty for listening to Canadians and building the Government’s Economic Plan around broad based tax cuts. In the federal Plan announced today, the Conservative Government revealed that it will be reducing the personal income tax burden on Canadians by more than $20 billion.

“In the extensive consultations during the planning of this budget, Canadians said they wanted to see tax cuts to help families through difficult times,” David Anderson stated. “The Conservative Government delivered lower taxes at a time when Canadians need their money the most.”

The Conservative Government announced that it will be raising the upper limit of the first two income tax brackets by 7.5% above 2008 levels. This will allow taxpayers to earn up to $40,726 and $81,452 before being subject to a higher income tax bracket. Canadian seniors will also be further protected through changes to RRIF requirements and a $1000 increase in the Age Credit.

The Government’s Economic Plan announcement included a deficit. David Anderson echoed the Finance Minister’s statement, “Canadians regret the need to run a deficit… We share that regret.” Anderson continued, “I have worked hard for smaller government, lower taxes and reduced regulation. I will continue to work towards these goals. The sooner we are out of deficit, the better.”

The Conservative Government also announced that significant funding will be allocated towards retraining workers hard hit by the economic slowdown, as well as on roads, bridges, and water treatment facilities. Also, agriculture will receive over $500 million in additional program funding.

“I am happy to see that the tax cuts I requested on behalf of Canadians were included in today’s Budget announcement. Canadian families will keep more of their hard-earned money in their pocket,” concluded David Anderson.
