June 10, 2009 – David Anderson, Member of Parliament for Cypress Hills - Grasslands and Parliamentary Secretary for Natural Resources has jointly seconded a Private Members’ Bill to put an end to the federal long-gun registry. MP Candice Hoeppner’s Bill, C-391, was placed in the Order of Precedence in the House of Commons on Friday, May 27th, 2009.
 
A longtime supporter of repealing the long-gun registry, Mr. Anderson has worked with Conservative MP Garry Breitkreuz, and many other rural Members of Parliament. Ms. Hoeppner’s bill is believed to have the support of enough Opposition MPs in an attempt to pass in this minority government.
 
“I have been working on this issue since I was first elected,” explained Mr. Anderson. “It is our duty to represent our law-abiding citizens, and rural Canadians have made their voice very clear on this issue. The long-gun registry targets law-abiding citizens instead of criminals, and the Opposition needs to realize this.”
 
“It’s time the rural Opposition Members stood up and were counted on this issue,” continued Mr. Anderson. “Only one Liberal Member of Parliament, Larry Bagnell, voted with the Conservatives on a recent motion regarding the long-gun registry, while several rural NDP Members of Parliament were missing from the House.”
 
Many Canadians are counting on support from rural Members of the Opposition, like Larry Bagnell and Wayne Easter, Dennis Bevington and Nathan Cullen to vote to repeal the long-gun registry.
