There is no clearer example of the confusion that will be caused by Justin Trudeau’s unpopular Carbon Tax than the farm fuel fiasco. The Liberal government is applying a Carbon Tax across Canada, but it is not being applied evenly. Farm fuels used ‘on farm’ are exempted, at least for now.
However, the Liberals now say that exemption will only apply to fuel that is delivered to the farm site. The exemption does not apply to fuel picked up by producers or fuel pumped from card locks. We have been inundated with calls from retailers and producers pointing out how completely unrealistic this is. Retailers have invested in card locks to provide a 24-hour fuel service to farmers.
It is convenient, it prevents theft from vacant farm yards, and it actually produces less greenhouse gas emissions because of reduced transportation activity. It’s ironic, but not surprising that even as this failed Liberal government implements its signature Carbon Tax, the very application of it makes the problem worse.
