October 16, 2009

SWIFT CURRENT, SK – David Anderson, MP for Cypress Hills-Grasslands, today announced the Government of Canada’s support to communities hosting celebrations during the Olympic Torch Relay’s journey across our country.

“As a Celebration Community the Olympic Torch will make a stop in Swift Current. It will be a great opportunity for Southwest Saskatchewan to gather together in support of the Olympic spirit.” Anderson said.

The Torch will be in Swift Current on January 10th, 2010 for a community celebration.
The Government of Canada is providing Swift Current with $15,000 for the local celebration.

“We are very pleased the Government of Canada will be assisting us in putting together a very exciting program to celebrate the Olympic Torch’s stop in Swift Current. The torch will provide the opportunity for everyone in the southwest to be part of Olympic History,” stated Sandy Larson, Mayor of Swift Current.

Funding for Swift Current will be used to highlight local talent and artists, provide interactive activities to engage youth and other individuals.

Across the country, each local celebration will be different, offering unique opportunities for all Canadians to welcome the Olympic Flame.  The events and activities organized by each celebration community will highlight Canadian pride in our athletes, culture and country.

“The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay will be the longest domestic relay in Olympic history,” said the Honourable Gary Lunn, Minister of State (Sport). “The Olympic Flame will be carried by 12,000 torchbearers through more than 1 000 communities across our country. I invite all Canadians to participate and embrace the Olympic spirit.”
